There are six choirs at NMSU. Concert Choir, Campus Choir, Crimson Chord Company, and Gospel Choir do not require auditions. Masterworks and University Singers audition requirements are listed below. Concert Choir, MUS 161 or 361, section 1, 1 credit, no audition required. Rehearsals are on Monday and Wednesday, 1:30-2:20 pm. Gospel Choir, MUS 161 or 361, section 2, 1 credit, no audition required. Rehearsals are on Monday, 7-9 pm. Campus Choir, MUS 161 or 361, section 3, 1 credit, no audition required. Rehearsals are on Tuesday, 4:30-6 pm. Crimson Chord Company, Mus 161 or 361, section 4, 1 credit, no audition required. Rehearsals are on Thursday, 7-9 pm. This is a men’s chorus. Masterworks Chorus, MUS 162, 360, 580, 1-2 credits. Rehearsals are on Tuesday, 7-9 pm. You will be asked to sing a solo, a cappella, from memory. It’s important to have beautiful tone quality, good pitch, control of vibrato, and pure vowels. You will be asked to match various vowel colors; this is a significant part of the audition. In addition, it is necessary to be able to sight-read a single line at the piano. If the music for a given semester is particularly demanding, you may be asked to audition in quartets, one singer per part. In addition, community singers will be asked to participate in fund raising activities. All singers will be asked to listen to CDs of performances and write critiques of what they hear. University Singers, MUS 160 or 368, 580, 1-2 credits; it is recommended that all singers sign up for 2 credits when possible. Rehearsals are Monday and Wednesday, 12:30-1:20 and Tuesday and Thursday, 11:50-1 pm. Music is available on or before August 1 and December 15 for the respective semesters. Learn the assigned music and be prepared to sing with 3 other singers on the various parts, a cappella, during the regularly scheduled rehearsal times. Section leaders are chosen by determining the singers that are best prepared. Once section leaders are chosen, all other singers are evaluated by the section leaders. All singers that choose to audition are all present for the auditions. Auditions take 4 days and the final list of University Singers is posted on the last day to drop/add.
