Freshman Recruiting Grant

The Freshman Recruiting Grant is $150 per semester and is only available to incoming voice majors.

Spring Visitors Day is the major audition day for incoming freshman. Preparation for the audition is as follows:

  1. Sing one piece from memory. An aria or art song is suggested (i.e. 24 Italian Art Songs, Musical Theatre Piece, German Lieder, French Art Song, etc.) The piece you sang for the New Mexico All-State Solo or Ensemble auditions should be fine.
  2. An accompanist will be provided. Therefore, it will not be necessary for you to bring a taped accompaniment. Make sure to bring an extra copy of music for the accompanist!!
  3. You will be asked to sight read both at the piano and vocally. The piano and vocal exercise is a single line melody similar to what is seen below.

  4. After the audition, you will be advised by Choral Office personnel. It will be helpful to bring a transcript of your grades (an unofficial copy is acceptable) and a copy of your ACT or SAT scores. This is advisable but not required.

Masterworks Scholarship

Often there is a particular voice part in Masterworks Chorus that needs an additional strong voice. This scholarship is awarded to a singer than can fulfill that need. Money for this scholarship is donated by current and past singers in Masterworks. The recipient of this award should be able to work well with the singers in Masterworks and show strong leadership in all areas.

Childers Memorial

In 1988, Russell Childers was a voice major at NMSU. His untimely death at the age of 19 was a serious blow to his family and friends. This scholarship was established in his memory. Interested singers should be exemplary students and be able to fill a strong leadership role in either Masterworks or Concert Choir.

McIntosh Memorial

Pinkie Warren established this scholarship in memory of her parents, J. Earle and Moselle McIntosh. Applicants should be service oriented as well as accomplished and dedicated singers. Participation in at least two choral ensembles is required.

Lee Grants

This award was established by Joe and June Lee for the specific purpose of helping young singers who want to have a career in opera. Auditions for the scholarship consist of singing several arias in at least 3 languages. The award is given to help with costs that are directly associated with auditions for opera competitions, auditions for entrance into opera companies, or similar circumstances.

University Singers Grant

All members of University Singers receive a grant when they successfully complete assigned tasks for the semester. The grant is awarded at various times during the semester depending on performance and rehearsal requirements. Each singer is evaluated on the music being performed during the semester by singing a cappella in quartets. Section leaders assist the director in the evaluations. You must have excellent piano skills, an advanced understanding of vocal technique, advanced language skills, and serious dedication to the choral art to sing in this choir.
Fred and Caroline Thompson Endowed Scholarship

Fred and Caroline Thompson have established this scholarship for the purpose of aiding students who are focusing on vocal music education or whose desire is to be a church music director. Applicants should be progressing on a music education degree and should maintain a 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to those who sing and play piano or organ.
